Business Energy Comparison

A comparison is only useful if it reflects the way your business uses energy. Two quotations with identical unit rates can produce different annual costs once standing charges, capacity charges and contract terms are taken into account, and a lower headline rate may not be the better option for a site with an unusual usage pattern.

We prepare a like-for-like view of the options available to you, set out the differences in writing, and explain the trade-offs so you can make an informed decision.

Like-for-like basis

Every option is shown on the same consumption assumptions.

Written summary

Charges, term and notice periods set out clearly.

No pressure

You decide whether any option is worth pursuing.

What a proper comparison includes

To compare fairly, every option must be priced on the same usage assumption. That means an agreed annual consumption figure for each fuel, the correct meter details and a consistent contract length.

  • Unit rates for the agreed consumption and the meter's profile.
  • Standing charges for each supply point.
  • Any capacity, availability or excess charges that apply to the site.
  • Contract length, notice period and the terms applying at the end of the term.
  • Whether the price is fixed for the whole term or subject to review.

Where comparisons commonly go wrong

It is easy to compare two figures that are not measuring the same thing. These are the differences we check before any recommendation is discussed.

  • Quotes built on estimated consumption rather than actual billed usage.
  • Options with different contract lengths presented as if they were equivalent.
  • One quote including a capacity charge while another omits it.
  • Assumptions about meter type that do not match the site, particularly with half-hourly supplies.
  • Comparing a renewal against a new connection quotation, which are priced differently.

Multi-site and portfolio reviews

Businesses operating more than one premises often have contracts starting and ending at different times, which makes it difficult to see the overall position. We can set out a summary of contract end dates, consumption and current arrangements across sites so renewals can be planned rather than reacted to.

Where usage across sites has been steady for a number of years, a review may also reveal meters or supplies that are no longer needed.

Who asks us to compare energy

Comparison work suits businesses that want a clear picture before making a decision, whatever their size.

  • Single-site businesses approaching a renewal date
  • Multi-site operators wanting one consolidated review
  • New occupiers taking on premises with existing supplies
  • Businesses that have inherited contracts from a previous owner
  • Companies with several meters or supplies to review
  • Organisations looking for a second opinion on a quote they already hold

Eligibility and what to expect

Comparisons are prepared from the usage information you provide, and the options shown depend on supplier criteria for your site. Where consumption data is incomplete or estimated, we will say so, because it affects how much weight can be placed on the figures.
